In the latest Google News poll, the Australian consumer discretionary subindustry is the number one industry identified by Australians as being critical to the Australian economy.
Consumer discretionary sub–industry companies provide the majority of Australian businesses with their consumer services, finance, consumer goods and services.
The industry has a diverse set of industries that comprise a range of industries from retail and food to manufacturing, tourism, information technology and the media.
In its 2017 report, the CDA estimated that the consumer discretionary industry contributed $4.2 billion to the economy and provided $4 billion in employment and $1.4 billion to national and local government.
However, this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the industry’s importance to Australia’s economy.
The CDA also reported that, of the major Australian consumer sub–instruments companies, only one – EBA Consumer Services Australia – has more than 1,000 employees.
In 2017, EBA was awarded $5.5 million to develop the Industry Catalyst 2020 survey to provide a broader picture of the sector.
It is a unique and extensive survey which will provide the broadest picture of consumer discretionary in Australia to date.
Key findings from the Industry Catalysts survey:The Industry Catalyst2020 survey will be a comprehensive and timely resource for all stakeholders to monitor consumer discretionary and its impact on the Australian and global economies.
This is a first-of-its-kind survey of consumer sub‐industries in Australia that will provide a snapshot of the consumer industry’s role and impact.
Industry Catalyst2020 will help ensure that the sector is seen as an important, key and keyholder industry in Australia, with a clear understanding of the key players, stakeholders and key issues that are impacting the sector, and that the industry is supported to continue to grow.
As the industry evolves, it will also provide a valuable resource for other stakeholders, including government and the private sector, to better understand consumer discretionary business and the industries that it supports.
In 2018, the industry was also recognised with a State and Territory Government Award.
Industrial Australia’s annual review of consumer industries in Australia was published in December 2018.
