The world of luxury cars has always been a difficult one for Australian consumers.
From the humble, gas-guzzling cars that came to the fore in the late 1960s and 70s to the more recent, well-equipped models that offer a luxurious interior, the range of models has grown steadily over the years.
But the cost of owning a luxury car has not been increasing.
The average Australian car costs about $16,000 to buy, according to the latest ABS Consumer Price Index.
The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that the average annual price of a luxury motor vehicle in Australia is $2,854.
That is almost a third of the national average.
The figures show that this gap between the national median and the average is even larger than the gap between cars that cost $20,000 and those that cost less than $1,000.
Aston Martin has been able to keep up with demand by selling a range of new cars, but it has also become more expensive than the competition.
This is partly due to a growing market share in the luxury car market, but also to a lack of innovation in the design of the new cars.
According to the ABS, more than 60 per cent of new car sales in Australia were in luxury models last year, compared to just 24 per cent in 2011.
The key drivers of this growth are rising petrol prices and rising fuel costs.
The introduction of new technology has also contributed to this.
A number of manufacturers have launched high-end luxury models in recent years, such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, but the range has not matched the demand for these models.
The ABS has forecast that by 2025 the luxury market will grow by 40 per cent.
“This is the first time since 2011 that the number of luxury luxury models will exceed the number sold in the domestic luxury market,” the ABS said in a statement.
“The increasing share of luxury vehicles in the market is likely to increase in the future, and the trend towards premium vehicles is expected to continue in the longer term.”
It is not just new cars that have grown in popularity over the last decade.
New cars have also become a key part of the luxury lifestyle.
This has been the case for many years now, with the average price of luxury passenger cars now more than doubling between 2001 and 2011.
According the ABS data, the average value of a car purchased in Australia has grown from $11,800 in 1999 to $16 (AUD) in 2013.
The new luxury cars have a more refined design and the design and technology of the cars have improved.
But they still need to be driven a certain amount of time to be truly luxurious.
